Gus belongs to Mrs. Gowan's REACH (gifted) class at Sonny Carter Elementary School in Macon, Georgia. He travels around the country visiting with families who have agreed to show him around and document his travel activities in his scrapbook. He keeps a strict itinerary, leaving for another trip every week or so.
In our classroom, we have a map on which we track the states Gus visits and the miles he has traveled. We study the scrapbook which contains information about some really neat places. Gus will not be hibernating this school year, he has places to go and people to see. Gus' host families have generously agreed to show Gus around their hometown, taking in some of the historic and geographic places of interest. By adding to his scrapbook, the students back home get to learn a little something about places that they would otherwise just read about in the social studies book.
